Bine ați venit!

People in a hurry, heads from pigs, calendars with icons, baked goods on cardboard, condensed milk, fresh fish, plastic bags, homemade honey, strange and curious looks -Balti 2023.

"Bine ați venit" means "Welcome" in Romanian. The covered market in Balti, located in northern Moldova, was built in the 60s and has served as a trade hub for over a century, witnessing life through both the Romanian and Soviet eras.

This photo series, started in 2023, reflects my personal connection to this place. Each visit evokes memories of my childhood—filled with strange smells, serious faces, and a longing for sweet treats that were never found here (very boring place for a 6-year-old child). My grandmother would bring me here weekly to buy fresh vegetables and fruits, a routine that felt more like a chore than a joy.

Since the 1970s, the world has undergone tremendous changes. The fall of the Soviet Union, the rise of globalization, and significant advancements in technology have reshaped societies. Economic shifts and cultural exchanges have transformed cities and communities, yet some places, like this market, remain steadfast in their traditions.

Walking through the market today feels like stepping back in time. Vendors still occupy the same stalls, wear the same uniforms, and share familiar jokes. It’s a place where the past and present blend seamlessly. The air is rich with the scents of fresh greens, homemade cheese, dried fruits, fresh fish, and meat—an unmistakable mix that defines this place.

This series is not just about the market; it’s a portrait of the people of Moldova, deeply connected to their traditions and their way of life. It is a space where daily life continues much as it always has, offering insight into the enduring values and routines that define Moldovan culture.
